What the Hell Wednesday - Baby Names

Here's my weekly rant courtesy of the Blue MonkeyButt Sisters.

Generally, I don't mind people getting excited because I'm pregnant. I don't mind people knowing. (It's easier for them to give up their seats for me and get me food when they know I'm pregnant.) I don't even mind them touching the belly because sometimes the contortions the baby is doing in there are unbelievable. The free unwanted advice generally goes in one ear and out the other. (Pretty much if I don't already know about it, I don't want to know or I would've asked.) The thing that is my personal pet peeve is the name game. As soon as people find out that I know the sex, they right away want to get into what her name is going to be. Even if I already had a name picked out, I wouldn't tell anyone. Here's the reason...People love to spoil a perfectly good name. Say I picked Jennifer (never gonna happen) As soon as I told someone, I would hear some story about how they knew this bitch/slut/bully named Jennifer. WTH? Either that or it's oh my sister/aunt/best friend is named Jennifer! News flash... I have seven sisters, two brothers and my husband has five sisters and one brother. Between us, we pretty much have enough baggage connected with at least half the names in the phone book so we don't need anyone else's. Oh and making this face when I tell you the name is also not appropriate.

If I tell you the name it is because I want you to love it and tell me how brilliant I am. Obviously!

I think people ask about the name to be polite. OK, saying they knew a bitch named Jennifer is probably not helpful, but they might be trying to relate to you.

People are just stupid....why in the world would you ask something like that and then turn around and say something negative? Some people need the polite smacked back into them.

I know! People are so effin' dumb when it comes to this. I have never, ever done that to someone because it's a special and important thing to name your baby...you don't need people pissin' on your parade.
PS I'm still thinking Optimus Prime...

Yea, I don't think telling anyone the name you have picked out is a good idea either. You're right, there's always a story with a name. Who needs that? Although my friend named her daughter something, and then found out it was the same as a popular Porn Actress....guess no one told her that one ;) Thanks for joining us today!

I totally get this post. I didn't tell anyone what we were naming our kids...of course, my husband didn't tell me until after they were born..long story.

so true. And if you have a name in mind for too long before your baby is born you are sick of it. Only one of my children was named what we had planned on. (total of 4)

One suggestion my son had before his sister was born was Dinosaur Butthead. Has a nice ring to it, don't you think? Feel free to use it. :) And believe me, we never let him forget this.

You are exactly right! Somebody knows somebody by every name and the association is always bad! You are a smart cookie! Don't tell!

I can definitely understand that...even my hubs did that to me! We didnt know what we were having with either of the girls so every time I would throw a name out, boy or girl, he would say no I knew blah blah blah and he/she was horrible. Gah but do you like the name!!! And when I named my oldest Rhiannon my inlaws swore that they would never call her that because Rhiannon herself would never be able to say or spell it....uh yeah thats what happened

Thanks for stopping by.

Good idea on not telling anyone about the name. They're less likely to tell you about the bitch / slut / bully after the baby is born. Then it would be "What a cute name"
